What is a Poker Bonus Code?

On some sites a bonus code is the only way to unlock certain bonuses like a . On others it may just be an easier way to opt-in to a standard welcome offer. Either way a bonus code is usually a short combination of letters and numbers that you enter at sign-up in order to receive something extra - like free money. What Are the Most Common Types of Bonus Offers?

Again this will depend on the poker room but most of them fall into these categories.

  • Deposit Match: The most common type of welcome bonus is a deposit match, where the poker room matches a percentage of your first deposit (or deposits) up to a maximum amount. For example, a 100% match bonus means that the poker room will give you $100 if you deposit $100. The average match value is around 100%, although you can find both higher and lower values. The size of the maximum bonus varies widely, from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000. Some poker sites also offer multi-part depositing bonus, meaning that you receive a bonus after multiple deposits.

  • Fixed Amount: Another less common type is a fixed amount bonus, where you receive a set amount of bonus money, regardless of how much you deposit. For instance, you might get $50 just for creating an account.

What Happens After I Enter the Poker Bonus Code?

When Will I Receive the Bonus?

Generally you’ll only be able to access the bonus funds once you’ve made an initial deposit and sometimes you have to play a certain number of hands too. Even if you’ve entered the correct poker room bonus code the money won’t just drop into your account. The act of depositing releases/triggers/unlocks it. 

Indeed the release of the bonus happens in what's called "increments" or sometimes "instalments" - and this depends on the poker room and the bonus itself. So if you're signing up for a $100 match, the funds aren't going to be deposited straight into your account. Instead, you'll typically need to play (see below for more details about how this work). As you play, you'll gradually release and receive money into your account in increments of $5 or $10 for example. So if you're signing up for a $100 match, the funds aren't going to be deposisted straight into your account. Instead, you'll typically need to play until $5 or $10 of your bonus is released and then it will be added to your cash balance. This process will continue until the full bonus has been received.

Wagering Requirements Explained

Ah, the bane of every online poker player’s life - but only if you’re unaware of how they work. Basically wagering requirements are the number of times you need to play through (i.e. bet) the total amount of your deposit and bonus before you can withdraw the bonus money.

So let’s say you deposited $50 and received a $50 bonus with a 35x wagering requirement - that means you would need to place bets totalling ($50 + $50) x 35 = $1750. Any more confused? Don’t be. It’s pretty simple when you break it down. 

Let’s imagine you want to buy into a tournament with your bonus cash. Let’s also say the tournament fee exactly equals the amount of bonus money you have left. You register for the tournament and - hey presto - all that money is gone. But that doesn’t mean the wagering requirement hasn’t been affected. You also need to look at the blind levels or cash game big blinds covered during the tournament - ie how many hands you’ve played. Only once you’ve played enough hands equal to the full wagering requirement will the bonus be considered cleared. 

The purpose of wagering requirements is to stop people from just walking away with free money. Indeed some bonuses never expire as long as you keep playing at that site.

Anything Else I Need to Know About Wagering Requirements?

Yes, there are two major points to consider.

  1. Not all game types count the same towards clearing your bonus. Cash game and sit & go hands will all count the same but some rooms give more weight to hands played on certain tables or at certain stakes. Tournament fees will usually weight anywhere from 0.5x to 1x depending on the site. You’ll want to maximize weighted hands to clear your bonus faster.
  2. Different sites have different time limits within which you must clear your bonus. Usually it’s 90 days but it can be shorter - sometimes much shorter - so check the small print. If you don’t clear the whole bonus before the time limit expires, you lose whatever portion had not been cleared.
